1966 GT350.CR Shelby Mustang
Prototype for sale in Draper, UT 84020
The folks at Shelby have made it
possible for automobile enthusiasts to revisit one of the rarest creations of
the Shelby Mustang Program, the 1966 G.T.350 convertible. Manufactured for Shelby by Wilhelm Motor
Works, the car combines the muscular pedigree of Shelby with America’s most
loved car, the Ford Mustang.
History
According to the Shelby American
World Registry, only 4 of these cars were made. “We were originally told it was
six. But I suspect Shelby actually said
something like ‘about a half a dozen’ and that translated into 6,” stated Rick
Kopec, originator of the Registry. “When
we finally found factory paperwork that showed the total production, the number
was, in fact, 4. That is now the
officially accepted number – backed up by factory work and shipping invoices.”
In 1981, Carroll Shelby realized that
the only car he had built that he didn’t have for his personal collection, was
the 1966 convertible. He contacted some
noted Mustang restorers, and asked them if they would build 4 cars (one for
him, and three for gifts) under his old Ford/Shelby license. Those cars were the first of the effort to
bring back more Shelby Mustangs. This
precedence set the scene for the current Continuation Shelby Mustang Program,
now called the G.T.350C.
“The G.T.350C, set up to resemble
closely the originals, is a great car to drive,” added Jon Wilhelm, CEO of
Wilhelm Motor Works. The car is called the “C”, designated for the convertible
option. The G.T.350C is built to satisfy
the most demanding enthusiast under the sun!
