The 2008 CJ500's were built 40 years after the release of the original versions at the 1968 NHRA Winternationals, these special Ford Racing-engineered vehicles spearheaded the brand's return to its NHRA sportsman roots, where they have played a very competitive role ever since. At 3,200 pounds, they certainly qualify as lightweights, and took advantage of 21st-century engine technology with a low rotational-drag blower design. These Cobra Jets and were branded in 2008 as the fastest limited-production drag-racing Mustang ever released. Offered turnkey from the factory, the engine is the supercharged 5.4L V-8 rated at a way-too-low/who-really-believes-it 420 HP, It has the 6-speed manual transmission, the racing-design black interior and it was delivered in all-white, similar to the original 1968 versions. The car is only legal to NHRA's 10-second limit as built, with a fully blueprinted version of this model eventually becoming the very first NHRA Stock Eliminator car to break into the 8-second barrier. It nonetheless remains in tune to run on 91-octane fuel and represents a watershed moment in Ford's motorsports involvement.
