1955 Chevrolet Cameo Carrier Pickup Truck

Description
1955 Chevrolet Cameo Carrier: The Ultimate Tri-Five Tow Vehicle

VISIONARY CUSTOM BUILD MEETS MODERN HAULING CAPABILITY
Some builds transcend the ordinary, breaking free from convention while respecting heritage. This 1955 Chevrolet Cameo Carrier embodies that rare achievement – a masterfully executed vision that answers the question: "What if Chevrolet had built the ultimate tow vehicle in 1955?"
What began life as a humble hauler has evolved into something extraordinary through a comprehensive transformation that combines classic styling with modern capability. But this isn't just any custom Cameo – it's the world's only extended-cab example, a one-of-one creation that seamlessly extends the original design language into something Chevrolet themselves could have built. Acquired by its visionary owner in the early 1980s, this Cameo served as a working truck for several years before being carefully stored away until the timing was right for its transformation. Once the owner's business success allowed him to retire and focus on his collection, this rare pickup would undergo an intensive rebuild that pushed the boundaries of what these trucks could be, enlisting top craftsmen to bring his unique vision to life. Out of 10,321 Cameos produced between 1955 and 1958, this example stands alone as a unique fusion of factory aesthetics and thoughtful modernization.

EXTERIOR
The magic begins with this Cameo's most distinctive feature – its perfectly proportioned extended cab. Built upon a 1986 Chevrolet Suburban chassis, which provided just over a foot of additional length compared to the stock frame, this masterful conversion was executed by the expert craftsmen at D'Elegance Restorations in San Marcos, California. Under the direction of Tel Powney, every detail was carefully considered to maintain factory aesthetics while adding functional space.

Master painter Pasi Kallunki of Pasi's Place applied the factory-correct combination of Bombay Ivory and Cardinal Red, each panel meticulously block-sanded to perfection. The extended stainless trim, a testament to Tel's attention to detail, runs 14 inches above and below the rear quarter windows, flowing seamlessly into the stock big window design. This isn't just modification – it's artistry.

Thoughtful details abound. Custom mirrors ensure excellent visibility for towing operations, while restored Guide spotlights provide additional illumination. The wheels showcase particular ingenuity – 16-inch steel wheels wear stock 15-inch Bel Air wheel covers, cleverly modified by welding them to larger diameter beauty rings and polished to a mirror finish. The bed features premium oak planking with stainless strips, concealing a fully integrated fifth-wheel hitch system with hidden wiring.

POWERTRAIN & CAPABILITY
Lift the hood and you'll find serious power replacing the original 265/three-speed combination. A fuel-injected 454 cubic inch V8 delivers substantial output through a Turbo 400 transmission, enhanced by a Gear Vendors Under/Overdrive unit for optimal towing capability and highway cruising efficiency. This powertrain combination, mated to the Suburban chassis, creates a classic truck with modern hauling credentials. The integrated fifth-wheel hitch, trailer brake controls, and extended wheelbase provide the stability and capability needed for confidently towing precious cargo.

INTERIOR
Inside, the cabin showcases a perfect marriage of classic style and modern convenience. Fidel of International Upholstery worked his magic on a '99 Dodge power seat, wrapping it in authentic Cameo material that maintains period correctness while adding modern comfort. The original steering wheel sits proudly atop a color-matched Flaming River tilt column, while Tel Powney's craftsmanship reveals itself in clever details like the Vintage Air controls concealed in the glovebox and a transmission temperature gauge hidden in the ashtray.

Modern amenities include VDO instruments, a period-correct Sun Super Tach II, and a RainGear wiper system replacing the original vacuum unit. A Horizon NavMate satellite navigation system integrates discreetly behind smooth stock panels in the bed wheel wells, while power vent windows add convenience without compromising the classic aesthetic.

VALIDATION OF EXCELLENCE
Perhaps the most telling endorsement of this truck's execution came at the Classic Chevy show at Bate's Nut Farm in Valley Center, California. There, Chuck Jordan – the original Cameo designer brought to GM by Harley Earl in the late 1940s – personally reviewed the truck. Jordan, whose first concept for GM was the Cameo Carrier, gave his enthusiastic approval to this extended cab interpretation, confirming that this build achieved exactly what Chevrolet could have – and perhaps should have – created in period.

THE BOTTOM LINE
This 1955 Chevrolet Cameo Carrier represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a truly unique piece of automotive history – a one-of-one creation that combines show-quality craftsmanship with genuine functionality. It's a testament to thoughtful modification, maintaining classic character while incorporating modern capabilities. Whether you're looking for a premium hauler for your classic car collection or a unique show piece that can handle real-world duties, this Cameo delivers on all fronts.
