Owners Description

POWERTRAIN

The engine in all 1955 Cadillac Series 62 models was a 331-cu.in. overhead-valve V8 with five main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, and a single Carter or Rochester four-barrel carburetor. Output for all but the Eldorado was rated at 250 horsepower at 4,600 rpm with 9.0:1 compression and 345 lb.-ft of torque, delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed GM Hydra-Matic transmission. The seller states that the engine in this example is original to the car. Cold starts are made by pressing the gas pedal three times and turning the key. The transmission is also said to be original to the car and shifts well. No leaks or weeps are reported, and no modifications have been made to either the engine or transmission according to the seller. Receipts for recent mechanical work will be provided.

EXTERIOR

The exterior finish of Mandan Red with a White top is described as “very good,” and appears to display no evidence of being refinished. The car presents well, with straight panels and even panel gaps (apart from the hood), as seen in the photos provided. All trim and lights appear complete, and all lights are said to be working. Small blemishes, chips, and scrapes can also be seen in the photos, altogether not unexpected for the age of the finish. The seller notes that the right front window is cracked, and delaminating edges can be seen in the photos of the left rear window. All other glass is described as “good.” No issues are reported with the seals and no leaks are mentioned. The seller also states that the body of this Coupe de Ville, sold new in Arkansas, remains “rust-free.” No modifications have been made to the exterior.

INTERIOR

The large six-passenger red and white interior combines painted metal surfaces, leather, and fabric with the high contrasts typical of 1950s American automobiles. The seller notes that the seats had been redone before he bought the car. No tears or stains are reported or observed, but the seller does note that the fabric shows some sun fade. The door panels, dashboard, steering wheel, gauges and controls, carpet, and headliner all appear original and are described by the seller as in “very good” condition. Front and rear Cadillac Crest floormats are also provided. The interior trim is described as complete. The gauges and controls are reported to work properly with the exception of the gas gauge and the radio. Power windows were still an innovation in 1955, and no issues are reported. Door handles, locks, and vent windows are manual. The heater is said to work. There is no air conditioning.

CHASSIS

Photos of the undercarriage appear to show minimal surface corrosion on the frame and component parts. The power steering is described by the seller as having a little play but “not bad,” and no leaks are reported. No suspension service has been required, according to the seller, although he also notes that the rear leaf springs have been replaced. The bushing and shocks are “very good,” and the heavy drum brakes are “good.” This Coupe de Ville rides on a handsome set of 15” aftermarket wire wheels, which display no visible damage. The 8.20-15 BFGoodrich Silvertown wide-whitewall tires are two years old, per the seller, and are period correct as tubeless tires were first offered as standard equipment by Cadillac in 1955.
