This 1984 Volkswagen Hightop Vanagon Hightop Camper made by Adventurewagen is powered by a 2.3L Gowesty motor paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. It's an amazing vehicle and is a head turner but after 13 years of adventure we have to part ways as I am building out another van and can't keep them both. This is a great camper van!
Highlights:
• Upgraded to 2.3L Gowesty Motor--lots of power up the passes and not a frankenvehicle (VW mechanic friendly)
Mileage on motor: 17K Vehicle: 177K
• Upgraded to 5 speed tranny with 1st gear being 1/2 granny gear. Great for climbing steep roads and 5th gear is amazing cruising down the highway
• Rocky Mtn Westy bumpers with tow hooks
• Cattle guard on the front bumper to save your life and serves as hammock post while camping
• Swing away tray on rear bumper for extra fuel, water, ice chest, etc.
• Bright rear led light added to actually see when in reverse
• Thumping Pioneer system with amps, 6 speakers and 8' sub plus bass knob--nice!
• RMW Front door storage kit--really handy
• AGM battery (expensive!) fitted under driver's seat for aux. purposes
• Sound deafening treatment to most areas
• Gowesty alloy wheels
• BFG Offroad tires--upgraded to bigger size
• 4 studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta tires all on Gowesty alloy wheels--great traction on snow and ice
No need to swap wheels--free snow tire changeover at Discount tire
• Rugged steel snow chains
• Brand new paint job with original retro colors
• Classic plates--never pay for tabs again
• Double slider windows and windows above that open--great air flow and so nice
• Air conditioning
Adventurewagen features:
• 2 bed system, one up one down. Couch converts to bed easily. Full sized futon plus is room for 3
• Pop-up table
• 2 burner cooking setup by sliding door is handy with pop up cook station and nice in good weather
• Fridge/freezer--electric
• Lots of storage
• Plenty of lights
• Swivel chair in passenger seat
• Solar shower--I never tried it myself
• Koa woodwork--way nicer than Westy interiors
• Wood floors--just refurbished
• Heater--propane fueled nice when super cold out
• Skylight that opens
• Windows galore and curtains
• Upper bed makes fantastic storage
• Large storage over cab
Good to know:
• Found a rust spot interior rear window
• Heater is moody sometimes
• Stove is dated and could be swapped
• I made modifications to some of the inefficiencies of the Adventurewagen interior--made more room for the bed, removed old scary aluminum water tank in favor of storage. Area can be reconfigured as desired or go back to original.
• Muffler has a leak--I have brand-new stainless-steel lifetime warranty ready to go
• Good thing/bad thing--this van draws a fair bit of attention. All little kids will point at you and wave.
Too many upgrades to recall/list all. If it needed anything I paid to keep it well maintained and ready to go.
Most mechanical components have been swapped out and upgraded, including fuel system and radiator.
